On August 1, 2011 the city will begin enforcing a law established under PlaNYC.

PlaNYC requires all buildings larger than 50,000 square feet to report energy and water usage to the Department of Buildings. Failure to do so will cost property owners $500. The City plans to use the data to establish new energy-efficiency benchmarks, which it hopes will save New Yorkers $700 million a year by 2030.
